Texas Sheet Cake

A rich chocolate sheet cake brought to a boil — frosted while hot from the stove

Ingredients

Cake — Bring to a Boil

  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa
  • 1 cup water

Add to Boiled Mixture

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 tsp baking soda

Frosting — Cook on Stove

  • 1 stick margarine
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa
  • 6 Tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 lb powdered sugar

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, bring 2 sticks margarine, 4 Tbsp cocoa, and 1 cup water to a boil.
  2. Remove from heat. Add flour, sugar, and salt and mix together.
  3. Then add eggs, sour cream, and baking soda. Mix well.
  4. Pour into a greased sheet pan and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
  5. While cake is baking, make the frosting: combine margarine, cocoa, milk, vanilla, and nuts in a saucepan and heat on the stove. Remove from heat and add powdered sugar. Beat until smooth.
  6. Frost the cake while it is still hot.
Key tip: Frost while hot — the warm cake absorbs the frosting beautifully.
