Ingredients
- 1 loaf white bread (crusts removed)
- ¼–½ lb shaved ham
- ¼–½ lb cheese of choice
- 10 oz vegetables (mushrooms, onions, etc.)
- Butter (to grease 13×9 pan)
- 3 cups milk
- 6 eggs
- ½ tsp salt
- ⅛ tsp pepper
Directions
- Butter a 13×9 pan. Layer bread first, then meat, cheese, vegetables, and end with bread on top.
- Mix together 3 cups milk, 6 eggs, salt, and pepper.
- Pour custard mixture over bread layers. Refrigerate overnight.
- Preheat oven and bake at 350°F covered for the first 1½ hours.
- Uncover and bake 2–2½ hours total. Check center to make sure a knife comes out clean.
Make the night before — the overnight soak is what makes this bake so custardy and rich.
