Bread Pudding

Virginia's classic bread pudding — warm, custardy, and studded with raisins

Ingredients

  • 2¾ cups milk or half-and-half or butter
  • 2 slightly beaten eggs
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ cup seedless raisins
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • Bread cups (to spread mixture over)

Directions

  1. Combine milk, eggs, and spread over bread cups.
  2. Stir in remaining ingredients and pour mixture into an 8-inch round baking dish.
  3. Place in a shallow pan with hot water around it, 1 inch deep.
  4. Bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted halfway between center and outside comes out clean.
Tip: The water bath (bain-marie) ensures even, gentle heat for a perfectly set custard.
