Ingredients

Base

  • 2 lbs shredded wheat biscuits
  • Butter, melted (generous pour for top and bottom)

Syrup

  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1¼ cups water
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1½ T orange blossom water

Directions

  1. Melt butter and put some in the bottom of a baking dish.
  2. Arrange shredded wheat biscuits in the dish.
  3. Pour remaining melted butter generously over the top.
  4. Bake at 350°F until golden and crisp, about 13½ minutes (or until golden brown).
  5. For syrup: combine sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil.
  6. Add juice of ½ lemon. Lower heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  7. Let cool, then add 1½ T orange blossom water. Let cool completely.
  8. Remove baked shredded wheat from oven. Pour cool syrup over hot biscuits.
  9. Serve immediately.
Aunt Helen's Note: The syrup must be cool and the wheat must be hot when they meet — that's what keeps it crisp. Don't let either one wait.
